As the core assembly of an engine, the faults of an engine short block are mainly concentrated on the cylinder block, cylinder head, and internal core moving parts. The common fault types and causes are as follows:
Cylinder Block Cracking or Deformation
This is one of the fatal faults of a short block, mostly caused by sudden cooling after engine overheating ("boiling"), freezing expansion due to failure to replace antifreeze in winter, and casting defects of the cylinder block.Cracks will lead to coolant leakage and engine oil emulsification; in severe cases, the engine will stop working completely.
Cylinder Head Deformation or Valve Seal Failure
Cylinder head deformation is often caused by long-term engine overheating and uneven tightening torque of cylinder head bolts. Deformation will damage the seal between the cylinder head and cylinder block, resulting in coolant leakage and insufficient cylinder pressure.Valve seal failure is mostly induced by excessive valve carbon deposits, valve seat ring wear, and excessive valve guide clearance, manifesting as engine idle jitter, power loss, and blue or black smoke emission from the exhaust pipe.
Piston and Piston Ring Faults
Piston scuffing is a common problem, triggered by insufficient engine oil lubrication, engine overheating, and foreign objects such as metal debris mixed in the intake tract. After scuffing, cylinder pressure will drop and engine oil consumption will accelerate.Piston ring wear, fracture, or carbon deposit sticking will deteriorate cylinder sealing, leading to symptoms such as "oil burning" (blue smoke from exhaust), power attenuation, and increased fuel consumption.
Crankshaft and Bearing Faults
Crankshaft journal wear and scuffing are mostly caused by engine oil contamination, poor lubrication, and engine overloading, which are characterized by heavy "piston slap" or "buzzing" noises when the engine is running.Excessive crankshaft bearing clearance or bearing burnout will result in low oil pressure; in extreme cases, the crankshaft will seize, and the engine will stall immediately.
Cylinder Wall Wear or Cylinder Scoring
Excessive cylinder wall wear will cause insufficient cylinder pressure, leading to engine power loss and idle instability. Cylinder scoring is a more severe wear fault, mostly caused by excessively small fit clearance between the piston and cylinder wall, poor lubrication, and high-temperature detonation. When this fault occurs, the engine will produce obvious abnormal noises, and engine oil consumption will increase sharply.
Supplementary Note
Most faults of the short block are directly related to lubrication and cooling system failure or substandard assembly processes. Maintaining the normal state of engine oil and coolant during daily maintenance can significantly reduce the probability of core faults in the short block.
